Winter Knowledge

A Novel Idea

If your auto isn’t prepared to drive on the snow-covered roads don’t drive on the snow-covered roads. You will not only feel foolish but everyone will think you are. And if you block the road because of it, not only has your day changed but you are impacting others as well. Be smart.

Plowing and Snow Removal

You can expect the Association to plow up to the parking lot. Normally, we plow after the storm has passed, not during. However, weather conditions and other factors may sometimes override this guideline.

We remind owners that it is your responsibility to make sure you and your guests have the appropriate vehicle, tires, chains and driving experience for road conditions year round and especially during the winter months. Our members purposely buy here to "get away" from city life - and that means gravel roads and the challenges that come with living in the mountains.

Do not salt gravel roads. We do not salt the gravel roads in Upper Whittemore. When you salt or apply any kind of snow melt product to a gravel road you melt down the road, and the road base gets ground-up into the dirt sub-base below. This causes the road to become muddy and destroys the road, causing thousands of dollars of damage.

Please understand that the UWPOA is here for the benefit of all owners and we try to make the mountain as accessible and safe as possible with funds made possible by each owners’ assessment fee. Thank you for paying that on time.

The Winter Parking Lot

Usually around Thanksgiving we see winter vehicle starting to show up in the winter lot. The general rule is that if you cannot get to your property without it, it’s time to keep one there. In the Spring, usually when owners can fully access their property with at least four-wheel drive, that’s when you should be taking it away.

The parking lot that is used during the Winter is a small area that can get crowded quickly. All who use it must be considerate if we are to continue to have it available. The following guidelines are strongly recommended in order to avoid public shame and general unfriendliness from other owners.

  1. Never park on the north side of the lot. The No Parking signs are there for a reason. See #2.

  2. Replace your automobile with your snow vehicle. For instance, pull the snow vehicle out and put your car there. That’s why you should never park on the North side of the lot - so people have enough space to pull in and out. When you come back pull your car out and replace it with your snow vehicle. Owners are allowed one spot only. There just isn’t enough room to store every single winter toy you have. Choose one and be happy.

  3. If you have guests the should park at the bottom otherwise they will take a spot that an owner could use. Whittemore property owner’s have priority over any guest, at any time. Always.

  4. Do not leave trailers of any kind in the lot over the winter.

  5. Do not store automobiles of any kind in the lot over winter. The only acceptable place for that is at the bottom of the road, but that gets crowded too. Don’t be that person that annoys everyone with your stuff.

  6. Be courteous. Be Patient. Be reasonable.
